DE's Business Lab: February is for gums

Feb. 22, 2022
There's a new month in town: Gum Disease Awareness Month. Teeth aren't the only thing that matter in the mouth. But do your patients know that? Dr. Sam Low says now is the time to tell them.

When I found out February is Gum Disease Awareness Month, I knew who I needed to talk to—Dr. Sam Low, one of the most well-known periodontists in our field. He says he's happy someone came up with the idea for Gum Awareness Month because patients don't always think beyond their teeth. But do dental professionals remember to discuss the gums with patients?

The new designated month comes with the opportunity to acquire Gum Disease Awareness Month publicity materials to share with patients, and to begin conversations about their periodontal health. Hear what Dr. Low recommends for your conversations (Subaru commercials anyone?), including with those patients who tell you their gums never bleed, despite holding a mirror to their mouth and revealing something entirely different.
