Using modern power technology to produce a harmonious dental hygiene work environment

Ultrasonic scalers and therapeutic air polishers help dental hygienists reduce physical strain while improving clinical efficiency and patient care. Power-enhanced instrumentation supports ergonomics, periodontal health, and better long-term treatment outcomes.

It is no secret to dental hygienists that the field challenges both the mind and body. Repetitive work under stressful conditions, high health risks, and insufficient appointment time have led to a significant percentage of the workforce experiencing burnout, decreased mental health, and shortened clinical careers.1-­3 Studies show up to 85% of dental hygienists suffer from work-­related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) of the neck, shoulder, wrist, and hands, with 64%–69% of workers reporting WMSDs specifically of the hand and wrist due to the repetitive muscle strain and movements required for instrumentation.4-­7 The goal of creating a harmonious dental hygiene work environment is to adopt and pair the technology of today to maximize efficiency, decrease the incidence of WMSDs, and improve job satisfaction while delivering the highest standards of patient care.

Advantages of power technology for the worker

Arguably the biggest change to dental hygienists’ work environment in the past two decades is the increase in manufacturer power technology portfolios, namely ultrasonic scalers and therapeutic air polishers. Power-­enhanced procedures that begin with air polishing for the removal of biofilm, stain, and immature dental calculus followed by ultrasonic scaling for the removal of firmly established deposits provide the following distinct ergonomic advantages for workers8:

  • Ultrasonic instrumentation reduces deposit removal time by 20%–36%, and air polishing removes soft deposits three to five times faster than other forms of instrumentation.
  • There is decreased debridement labor intensity as the machine is removing the deposits for the provider.
  • Hand grasp is relaxed, no pinch force is used, and less than 10g of lateral pressure is transmitted to the palm and fingers.
  • Flexible bilateral operator chair positioning is available with direct vision during debridement.

When deposit removal time and strain decreases, the efficiency of procedures improves, which harmonizes the work environment by giving the hygienist more time during appointments and mitigates the risk of WMSDs, especially of the hand and wrist.

Advantages of power technology for the patient

Congruent to worker advantages, power technology also provides distinct improvements in patient comfort and treatment outcomes. Power-­enhanced procedures support the American Academy of Periodontology’s promotion of practicing periodontal medicine as published with the 2018 Classification System.

Providers can now improve oral-­systemic symbiosis and patient outcomes with power-­enhanced procedures through the technology’s fluid dynamic (acoustic cavitation and microstreaming, liquid jet production, irrigation, lavage) and mechanical mechanisms of actions.

  • Tooth and root surfaces are detoxified through microbial load and pathogenic organism reduction that favors a symbiotic oral microbiome.8
  • Inflammatory mediators and harmful biofilm by-­products are lowered and become more regulated.8
  • There is less removal, damage, and alterations of cementum and dentin during instrumentation, which promotes reattachment through providing a cemental surface that favors the adhesion of fibroblasts and decreases the risk for dentinal hypersensitivity.9-­10
  • Gingival integrity and complex root anatomy access and adaptation is improved with thin and ultrathin shank architectures.8
  • Patient comfort during subgingival debridement is improved as compared to traditional forms of instrumentation.8,11-­13
  • Therapeutic air polishing with glycine is the recommended form of debridement for dental implants and implant-­supported prosthetics to fully decontaminate surfaces without harmful effects to the materials.8,14

Conclusion

Ultrasonic scalers and therapeutic air-­polishing technologies contribute to a harmonious work environment for dental hygienists. Power-­enhanced procedures meet the current standards of patient-­centered care by supporting both oral and systemic symbiosis and health.
