Dental practice of the year

Nov. 1, 1997
In all walks of life, some people always aspire to be the best. Nowhere is this more evident than in dentistry, where dentists are held to rigid standards and embody the professional code of offering the best possible care to every patient. If dentistry is characterized as a profession by one motto, it is "To give the best. To be the best."

In all walks of life, some people always aspire to be the best. Nowhere is this more evident than in dentistry, where dentists are held to rigid standards and embody the professional code of offering the best possible care to every patient. If dentistry is characterized as a profession by one motto, it is "To give the best. To be the best."

In an effort to take this concept of the best to a higher level, Dental Economics and The Levin Group of Baltimore, Md., have joined together to create a program to be known as Dental Practice of the Year.

The Dental Practice of the Year program has the singular goal of helping to identify the top dental practice in the country each year, based on applications from dental professionals. The parameters to be selected as a finalist will include all aspects of dental practice from quality factors to financial achievement. Emphasis will not be on any one factor, allowing for the Dental Practice of the Year to be representative of a well-rounded practice.

The Dental Practice of the Year program began when I visited The Levin Group in Baltimore to meet with Roger P. Levin, DDS, MBA, and to tour their new facility. During our meeting, we both recognized that there should be a vehicle to not only identify the Dental Practice of the Year, but to hold it out as a standard by which other practices can measure themselves and look for areas of potential improvement.

While I recognize that there are many fine dental practices in the United States, and that it will not be easy to identify one that is superior to all of the others, the different parameters of judging the Dental Practice of the Year have been carefully established and are broad-based.

During my meeting with Dr. Levin, we established a number of criteria to select the Dental Practice of the Year and how the program would operate. As you will see in upcoming advertisements in Dental Economics, there is a relatively short application that must be completed by all potential candidates for Dental Practice of the Year. From these applications, The Levin Group and advisers will then select finalists for Dental Practice of the Year.

Each finalist will be visited by a consultant from The Levin Group, who will gather information to bring back and compare. The practice that is selected to have those qualities that make it as close to an ideal practice as possible will become the Dental Practice of the Year.

Both Dental Economics and The Levin Group are organizations that aspire to excellence. As joint sponsors, the expertise of both organizations will be used to help facilitate the entire Dental Practice of the Year program.
