The American Dental Association estimates that dentists provided $3.2 billion in free or discounted care to disadvantaged patients in 1993. A survey of nearly 7,000 private practitioners, general dentists and specialists found that a dentist, on average, provided $23,530 in free or discounted care in one year. The Department of Health and Human Services estimates that Americans spent approximately $37.4 billion on dental services in 1994.
