What product or technology has recently changed your world?

When I started my practice last year, the one piece of technology that was absolutely pivotal to my practice was a good intraoral camera. I do not know how I practiced without one prior to this. We have the Acteon Soprolife intraoral camera, but any good camera can be such an incredible tool. My practice philosophy has education at the heart of it, and to be able to tell my patients the story of their oral health using pictures was transformational to my practice. I also enjoyed having the added benefit of an LED light that helps show my patient’s incipient groove caries. (I always used this as a patient education tool and not a true diagnostic tool. I always felt more comfortable relying on my diagnostic skills and then using the light to help my patients see what I saw.) The bells and whistles were great, but I tell my students that having a good basic intraoral camera is important to help you be an effective communicator.

What’s a piece of advice you wish you’d received five years ago?

“You will spend the rest of your life growing.” There are “prescriptions” made by society that you listen to in your 20s. They dictate the right time to do things . . . to buy a house, to get married, to have children, to buy a practice, to retire, etc. I wish I could go back and tell my younger self that these “prescriptions” are not one-size-fits-all.

Now I realize that a healthier way to live your life is to listen to your instincts. Forge your own path and own the uniqueness of that path. We owe it to ourselves to live our most authentic lives, and I hope I am growing, changing, and living my best life all the way until the end.
