The Food and Drug Administration`s dental-products panel met in December to study the safety and effectiveness of three over-the-counter products to fight plaque and gingivitis. The panel is reviewing data about the use of hydrogen peroxide, sodium bicarbonate and sanguinaria extract. The panel is expected to issue an opinion about the use of these products to fight gum disease and their effectiveness at its next meeting in June.
