Astra Pharmaceuticals, L.P. introduces PerioChip® for the treatment of adult periodontitis. PerioChip, the first biodegradable delivery system for reducing pocket depth in adult periodontitis, is designed as an adjunctive therapy to scaling and root-planing.
PerioChip, a 4x5 mm chip the size of a baby`s fingernail, is inserted directly into infected periodontal pockets that are 5 mm or greater in depth - following scaling and root-planing - to remove plaque and calculus deposits. PerioChip stays in place, releasing chlorhexidine (an antimicrobial) and is fully bioabsorbable in seven-10 days. There is no need for patients to come back for its removal.
