New book challenges dentists to tune in to patients

A dentist refers to a patient as "the root canal in room three." Another patient is told she needs a filling, which is done right on the spot - making her feel like she's being shoved through a fast-food drive-through. A third patient doesn't even meet the dentist until the last three minutes of his appointment.

What's wrong with these dental practices? Everything, says Dr. Barry Polansky, a Cherry Hill, N.J., dentist and author of The Art of the Examination: Why Patient Care Goes Beyond Clinical Correctness (Private Practice Publications, 2002).

Dentists often get a bad rap - and sometimes it's well deserved, says Polansky. By creating an optimal customer experience, however, the business owner demonstrates that his service is of high value - and the customer is more likely to return.

Dentists, however, are rarely taught such skills in dental school. Polansky's book can educate dentists, dental students, and office managers on how to run a happier, more successful practice and improve the bottom line.

The Art of the Examination sells for $79.95. To order, call (800) 453-9891 or fax at (800) 282-7358.

Virtual try-in feature enhances communications

X-Rite, Inc., world leader in optical color measurement technology, announces the latest enhancement to the ShadeVision™ System, the "Virtual Try-In Feature," which allows the lab technician to virtually test the shade of the restoration before it is sent back to the dentist. The new feature allows the lab technician to electronically compare the restoration side-by-side with the original work. As a result, the chances for complete shade accuracy increase significantly, improving the likelihood of a satisfied dentist and patient.

Virtually measuring the accuracy of the shade match allows the lab technician to address and correct any concerns with the restoration before it is sent back to the dentist. This leads to an increase in productivity, a reduction in the number of remakes, and minimized patient visits. Additionally, the shade information can be electronically sent to the dentist for review and approval before the actual restoration is delivered.

For more information, visit www.shadevision.com or call (866) 617-4233.

VibraJect reduces injection pain

VibraJect, LLC, announces VibraJect, an analgesic syringe clip for dental injections. Patented and designed by oral surgeon Dr. Norman Pokras, VibraJect reduces pain associated with injections - especially palatal, mandibular block, intraligamentary, and those above the front teeth.

VibraJect is a small, easy-to-use attachment that snaps onto conventional dental syringes and vibrates the needle at high frequency. It does not require new injection techniques. The product requires two 1.5 volt batteries and can be turned on and off with a twist of the motor. There are no disposable accessories and no topical is needed, so injections can be administered more quickly.

VibraJect is based on the Gate Control Theory of Nerve Function which suggests that nerve endings sense vibrations first and then cannot transmit feelings of pain.

VibraJect is $199 which includes one motor cartridge, three autoclavable clips, and four replacement batteries.

New findings compare effectiveness

Listerine®Antiseptic Mouthrinse is the only leading, clinically proven, nonprescription mouthrinse widely established as an adjunct to mechanical oral-hygiene procedures for plaque and gingivitis control. Data from two six-month clinical trials comparing the effectiveness of rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash to daily flossing in fighting plaque and gingivitis were presented recently at a dental research meeting (IADR). The two studies showed that the antimicrobial action of Listerine is at least as good as flossing in improving gingival health and plaque reduction, especially in hard-to-reach areas of the mouth. These findings support the fact that rinsing with Listerine after toothbrushing benchmarks with the gold standard of flossing in controlling interproximal plaque and gingivitis.

The findings do not mean that flossing should be replaced with rinsing. Dentists and hygienists should talk to their patients about what is best for their oral healthcare routine, and devise strategies to target difficult-to-reach areas that are susceptible to plaque accumulation and gingivitis such as interproximal areas.

Interproximal plaque accumulation was reduced by 37.5 percent and 20 percent, respectively, in patients who rinsed twice a day with Listerine. In comparison, those patients who flossed daily showed a 2.1 percent and 3.4 percent reduction in interproximal plaque accumulation.
