DE's Business Lab: Zirconiamania is here! But do you really know what’s in your zirconia crowns?

April 9, 2024
What are some potential pitfalls with zirconia crowns? With zirconia largely unregulated, dentists have a lot of choices they may not completely understand. Drs. Pam and David discuss which zirconias they use and why.

One of dentistry’s dirty little secrets is that zirconia is largely unregulated, so just writing “no. 3 zirconia crown” on a lab slip doesn’t cut it. We won’t know the strength of the zirconia we’re getting.

In this video, we’ll cover a lot of ground about zirconia in just a short time. We’ll discuss its physical properties as well as ways to communicate about zirconia to the lab so we can get what we want.

Keep in mind these three keys to working with zirconia:

  • Know what zirconia you’re prescribing.
  • Make sure you’re handling the zirconia properly.
  • Make a mindful decision on whether to lute or bond.

We’ll also talk about how ZirCAD Prime and ZirCAD Prime Esthetic from Ivoclar can give you strength and beauty—in other words, ZirCAD gives you 5Y zirconia where you need it and 3Y zirconia by the tissue for maximum strength.
