Buying bitcoin is only the first decision. How you hold it determines what you own, who can move it, which failures can hurt you, and who can help when something goes wrong.

Dentists already understand the principle: the right protocol is not the most complicated one. It is the one matched to the risks and followed reliably. Bitcoin custody works the same way.

Before choosing hardware or memorizing terminology, you need to decide what you are optimizing for: simplicity, direct ownership, key control, resilience, or support.

This session gives practice owners a practical framework for comparing four approaches:

  • A spot bitcoin ETF offers familiar brokerage access and price exposure. You own shares in a fund, not the underlying bitcoin, and you hold no keys.
  • An exchange lets you buy bitcoin and may allow you to withdraw it, but the provider controls the keys until that withdrawal is complete.
  •  A singlesig hardware wallet puts signing authority directly in your hands. The setup is relatively simple, but security, backup, and recovery responsibility remain concentrated with you.
  • Multisig and collaborative custody distributes signing authority across independent keys. It can reduce single-key risk and create room for collaborative support, with more setup and coordination.

We will compare each model across the dimensions that matter in real life: control, convenience, counterparty dependence, theft, loss, recovery, death, and incapacity.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Distinguish bitcoin price exposure, provider-controlled custody, and direct key control
  • Compare ETFs, exchange custody, singlesig, and multisig across control, convenience, counterparty dependence, and recovery
  • Use a practical decision framework to identify which model best fits desired control, operational capacity, succession needs, and support requirements
