Pearls for your Practice
Pearl #1 - Instrument Wrappers by McKenzie Management. Infection-control guidelines have been a part of our everyday routine since 1987. Carrying out these rules has caused dentists to become "disposable-crazy." Hospitals figured out long ago that disposables are cost-prohibitive. As a result, procedure instrument wraps are used widely by hospitals and by the military. The number of patients seen per day in a dental office requires a quick turnaround time on instruments, lending them to the wrap
Practice Success
It is incredible how much computers have changed our lives in such a short time. It seems like just yesterday that you had a computer only if you were rich, and if you did have one, you didn`t know what to do with it.
If a new employee doesn`t have a good attitude about work or the right personality for your practice, it`s unlikely on-the-job training is going to make a difference. An easier, more cost-effective alternative is to recruit the right people at the outset.
Tax Q&A
Recently, one of my valued employees admitted to me that she and her husband have not filed income-tax returns for several years. Since she is a valuable employee, I would like to see what I could do to keep her from going to jail. What are her options?

Dr. William Ten Pas, president of the American Dental Association, testified before a House Appropriations subcommittee in February, urging Congress not to cut back programs that would hurt dentists and the delivery of dental care. He told the subcommittee that the downsizing in the federal government would adversely impact dental programs that receive federal dollars. Currently, the federal government picks up the tab for about 2.7 percent of all dental-care expenditures, but cutting it any mor
The American Dental Association is urging 5,000 dentists in 16 states to write their lawmakers in support of legislation to reform the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The legislation would exempt from random inspections small businesses whose injury or lost work-day rates fall below the national average and reduce penalties for nonserious violations.
The Veterans Health Administration scratched plans to eliminate 10 percent of its general-dentistry resident slots after protests from the ADA and others.
President Clinton has signed into law the Defense Appropriations Bill, which will set up a new dental benefit for reservists. The Defense Department is expected to come up with a plan by Oct. 1 on how to provide dental coverage for more than one million reservists. It guarantees that the reservist would pay no more than $20 a month in premiums for coverage. The benefit was prompted by the military`s experience during the Persian Gulf War in 1991 when hundreds of Reserve and National Guard units
In other ADA news, the association sent letters to the National Governor`s Association and every member of Congress, criticizing the NGA plan to restructure Medicaid and cut back on dental care for the poor. The governor`s proposal would guarantee dental services to children only through age 12 and allow the states to decide how much and what kind of services. "The past three decades have clearly shown that states, when faced with budgetary constraints, have curtailed or eliminated Medicaid adul
In other OSHA news, the agency has issued new enforcement guidelines to protect workers against hazards posed by tuberculosis. "OSHA has taken this action to control occupational exposures to TB because the incidence of the disease has increased 14 percent since 1985, reversing a 30-year downward trend," said Joseph Dear, assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA. The agency will continue to inspect for occupational exposure to TB in response to employee complaints or as a part of industrial-hygiene
When we think of organization, we think of efficiency, neatness, increased pride and, most of all, improved profits. After consulting with or visiting hundreds of practices, a common element has become increasingly apparent in my observations. Uncluttered practices operate more smoothly, retain staff longer and produce more per hour. Clutter gives patients the wrong impression of a practice`s attention to detail.
It has been estimated that in more than 20 percent of medical-malpractice cases, flawed or incomplete medical records have made it impossible for the accused physician to defend himself. If dentists think we have a higher standard than that, we deceive ourselves. The percentage of inadequate records, if anything, is apt to be higher. Why does it matter?

Viewpoint
Casting about for topics, I find the slot for praising managed-care programs is wide open. At last, I can jump to the loyal opposition with authority and experience. I come to the aid of hapless colleagues flagellated by a bad press.
