RDH Magazine, June 1996 ARTICLES

Volume: 16
Issue: 6
June 1996

Feature

Nearly all business and practice management consultants say staff meetings are important to the success of the team. Meetings improve communication, generate creative alternatives to problems, increase office harmony, better serve the patients, and can even help improve team spirit. All too often, though, staff meetings become gab fests or gripe sessions - pointless and unproductive.

By accurately assessing attachment loss, the dental team can respond with increased hygiene efforts or gingival grafts.

Editor's Note

The boss wants us to have a meeting about meetings. He read this article by Cathy Alty on page 22 in the June 1996 issue of RDH magazine. He thinks we`re behaving in an unorthodox manner during staff meetings. We fall asleep. We desire bodily harm to our colleagues when they drone on and on about the new forms we have to complete. The silent counting of knobs in a room is actually interesting. We vow to find a new job with a boss who does not schedule meetings during the lunch hour. We contempla

Reader's Forum

Thank you so much for publishing my letter in the March 1996 issue. I have received 20 responses so far. I`m shocked to learn how widespread work-related injuries are in the field of dental hygiene.

Kristin Lund, RDH, is a dental health consultant with the Colorado Migrant Health Program in Denver. CMHP promotes and protects the health of the state`s migrant and seasonal farmworker population. Lund recruits and trains approximately 20 hygienists each year to provide preventive dental services to the migrant population. Armed with portable dental units, hygienists in the program visit migrant summer schools (photo above shows one class receiving oral hygiene tips in 1995) during a period of

I am writing in response to the letters from the graduates of the Alabama preceptorship program. While I respect their pride and acknowledge that they may be clinically proficient in our profession, I would like to relate my experience.

I am not in favor of preceptorship. While I believe that those hygienists who have successfully gone through a preceptorship program should be recognized with a certain amount of respect, I also believe that they should have a title other than "RDH," which has traditionally referred to a registered dental hygienist who has successfully completed a college degree progam as well as national and state or regional board exams.

This is in response to "What exactly does the `white tradition` symbolize for the hygiene profession?" (Commentary, March 1996) All I have to say to Ms. Jones is, "Oh! Please, spare me!"

I am writing in response to the `white tradition` Commentary by Heidi Jones (March 1996). I found it hard to make sense of the article, which addressed wearing white in dentistry, until I got to the part of the quest for autonomy. Finally, the point: our dress makes us less professional. The concern is the public perception of hygienists since all of the auxiliaries dress alike. It`s another reason for self-regulation and independent practice.

Several months ago, you printed a letter from me regarding my disappointment that you had interviewed and used quotes from Dr. Howard Farran of Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Farran had publicly called hygienists vultures, and I was displeased that RDH should support him.

I recently looked into obtaining a license in Florida. We`re thinking of moving there in a year or so, and I wanted to have all my ducks in a row. I was shocked to discover that not only would I have to take the Florida state written and clinical exam, but also the national exam would have to be retaken! The dollar cost would be about $2,500, and the cost in time would be anywhere from six months to one year.

Case Study

A 63-year-old male visited a dentist for a checkup. Radiographic examination revealed two small, round radiopacities attached to the roots of the right maxillary molars.

Infection Control

Most physical tasks we perform produce visible re-sults immediately, and re-sults can give us immediate feedback of how well the task was performed. When you perform a prophy, for example, the patient`s clean teeth are immediately visible. When you complete a patient`s chart, the written remarks are immediately visible. When you set up the operatory, the arrangement of the instruments and other items are immediately visible. When you adjust the dental unit light, the clear view inside of the pat

Periodontics

We all smell "perio breath," especially in perio patients who also smoke. I`m sure you can also think of several perio patients who didn`t have the typical "perio breath" or any noticeable oral malodor. Although it is generally assumed that bad breath and periodontal disease go together, this may not always be the case.

We often discuss the adverse effects of tobacco with patients who smoke. We are the ones they hate to face as we examine the lingual aspects of their teeth, easily seeing the heavy tobacco stain not visible to the rest of the world.

In the April 1996 issue, we asked hygienists who returned to dental hygiene after an extended leave of absence to reflect on the experience. In their answers below, the readers responded to RDH`s questions about any difficulties they experienced in leaving dental hygiene, what prompted them to return to the profession, did they have any "regrets," and advice they would give a colleague contemplating a return.

Every time I see supermodel Rachel Hunter I feel a pang of jealousy. For starters, she is Mrs. Rod Stewart. She can hear him sing Maggie May, Hot Legs, and Twistin` the Night Away live, anytime she wants. And she`s gorgeous. The producers of the goods she promotes know that we consumers feel an implied promise that, if only we buy the cosmetics, the hair conditioner, the exercise video, the pantyhose with built-in girdles, we might come a little closer to matching society`s idea of beautiful.
