Pearls for your Practice
Pearl #1-The Block Inlay Bridge by Aesthetic Porcelain Studios (Figure 1). We all have been searching for the conservative, esthetic inlay bridge for years. I had limited success with the Maryland bridge, and the esthetics certainly left something to be desired. Today, patients are be-coming more and more demanding. They question why we must prepare teeth for full coverage, and they expect the same vitality, chroma and hues that they have in their veneers or all-ceramic crowns in their crown and
Practice Success
Scratch that title! The term infection control is negative and we have to stop using it. Instead, begin to refer to it as patient protection. Patient protection is a positive term, which certainly sounds a whole lot better.
During a treatment conference (case presentation) patients listen to your every word. The problem: They sometimes interpret what you say or do, differently than you intended.
Tax Q&A
Over the past several years, I have paid my disability-insurance premiums personally, so that the benefits will be tax-free if I am disabled. However, at the end of each policy year, if I have not been disabled, my professional corporation reimburses me for the disability-insurance premiums paid during the prior policy year. In this manner, the premiums end up being paid with pre-tax (tax-deductible) dollars. In the event that I was disabled, no reimbursement would be received for that year, and

People with gum disease may be able to use antibiotics and avoid surgery and tooth extraction, according to a new study. The research, backed by the National Institute of Dental Health, found that scaling and deep cleaning of the teeth and gums, combined with short-term antibiotics, dramatically reduced the need for gum surgery and extractions. The research, by the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, showed drug treatment also spared 690 of the 783 teeth originally recommended for surger
About 41 million people in the United States, most of them middle-class workers, had trouble getting some type of health care, ranging from surgery to eyeglasses to mental-health care in 1994-95, according to a new study by Project HOPE, a health-care think tank. The survey of 3,450 people in 1994-95 found that dental care was the most difficult for people to obtain. About 8.5 percent reported not being able to get the care when they thought they needed it.
A health-care bill that would help people get insurance is stalled. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Nancy Kassebaum, R-Kan. and Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., would allow people to carry their insurance with them when they change jobs. But, the legislation is not moving, in part because of extra amendments attached to it. The American Dental Association is supporting one amendment that would allow taxpayers to set up tax-free Medical Savings Accounts to pay their medical bills, including dental bills
Eliminating adult dental benefits from a state`s Medicaid program could lead to a substantial increase in dental visits to hospital emergency departments, according to an ADA study. The study of Maryland`s decision to cut costs found a 21.8 percent increase in emergency room dental visits by adults in Maryland. Maryland eliminated Medicaid reimbursements to private-practice dentists for treatment of adults experiencing dental emergencies. "The Maryland study is especially instructive as Congress
The American Dental Association will offer temporary dues waivers to dentists called to active duty in the UN`s peacekeeping mission in Bosnia.
I was running on my treadmill and watching the NBA on NBC when I came to a wonderful "Ah Hah" experience. The experience that brings cause and effect together in the twinkling of an eye. The experience that manifests the profound practical knowledge we call wisdom. Marv Albert, the announcer, was talking about the popular Orlando Magic player, Penny Hardaway, and how he became a member of The Magic.
I have good news and I have some bad news. First, the bad news. We appear to have lost control of dentistry. This happened about five years ago and we didn`t even realize it as it was happening.
A lack of office space due to a growing practice is a common reason dentists point to for building a new office or renovating their current space. Faced with that problem, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, general dentist Barry Rosenthal decided to solve it once and for all with one giant step, er...jump: "I built a new office that increased my working space from 920 square feet and five operatories to 4,200 square feet and nine operatories. Nowa- days, even with 14 staff members, we don`t feel crowded.
It`s Monday in your office and it is extremely busy. Mr. Jones is in one operatory for recementing of a crown. Ms. Smith is in another operatory with your assistant for impressions. The third operatory is set up for your next appointment, an emergency patient. Things are moving along slowly and you call your assistant into the operatory. Rushing in, your assistant dispenses enough bonding agent to use for 10 composites. While you are thinking about the expense of that new bonding agent, you reac
Advertising is becoming a more acceptable tool to promote a practice and the fees of advertising dentists are higher for the most part, according to results of Dental Economics` 1996 Fee Survey. The study examined fees for 46 services in 1995.
The first priority every dental practice should establish is to maintain the highest standard of customer (patient) service. I`ve come to this conclusion after polling hundreds of other people while traveling. I ask them what it is that they enjoy most about their dentists and what it was that kept them going back. The overwhelming response credits the pleasant, friendly atmosphere and a comprehensive, easily-understood case treatment.
The three letters (NSF) can hurt, especially when they mean "insufficient funds" on a patient`s check that the bank has returned. How can we decide which checks might be good or which might have odds of never yielding a dime?

Editor's Note
The dental practice of the future is already here-although we may not yet recognize it. The winds of change will cause some drifting, and not one of us knows precisely what will last and what will be temporary. There is much concern over the impact of managed care. Managed care need not be the determining factor in the makeup of tomorrow`s dental practices.
Viewpoint
Dentistry is coming under increasing assault by outside forces of great strength and size. The list of administrative agencies, insurance companies, lawyers, legislators and patient advocacy groups that seek to dictate how we practice is growing at an alarming rate. Most dentists are familiar with the alphabet soup of organizations that are pressuring us--PPOs, HMOs, OSHA, OPD, Esq. and mandatory CE-to name a few. While they all tax our ability to practice with autonomy, coexisting with these
